I recently purchased auto insurance from a certain company. while given them my info, i told them i only drive 3miles to work. However i recently changed jobs and now i have to travel about 15 miles to work. Also i live in maryland and i have to drive to dc once a week which is like a 50 mile drive. Do i need to contact my insurance company and tell them my new development or do i just tell them that my estimated annual mileage will increase. Also, will my rates go up?

  1. It depends on how honest you want to be. If the distance you drive to work changes, your premiums may increase since you're now a higher risk. So......you could be honest and tell them now, or wait until a customer review comes along and see if they ask.

Since your asking for our opinions, I'll give you mine. I think you should call them and report the change. I believe that lying by omission is still lying. And you never know, they might say that the mileage increase is still not enough to bump your premiums up. Then you can rest your head easily at night and still pay the same amount in insurance.

  2. You don't need to do anything. When your insurance comes up for renewal they may ask you to correct any wrong information at which time you can change the drive to work distance.
