  1. If you can't afford insurance, I don't think you can afford a baby.  The doctor, hospital, hospital supplies, and a multitude of things I cannot recall all bill separately.  The doctor alone might cost $1500 (for prenatal care and delivery).  Hospital could be $1000 - $2000 a night.  That's if everything goes smoothly.  What about a crib, buggy, diapers, clothing, high chair, playpen, pediatrician, etc.

Babies are wonderful, but you might want to wait a while.

  2. Well, maternity coverage is basically a prepaid birth - you have to carry it about 18 months before the baby is born, and it will cost you about $300 a month ON TOP OF the regular health insurance premium.  Or, you can pay cash for your birth.

That's because the only people that want to buy baby insurance, are the ones that want to use it.  So it's prepaid.

And that ultrasound is NOT violet.

  3. The cost vary from state to state. Check out your insurance commissioners website.  You can also get a referral to a licensed insurance agent, who can help you find the righ policy for the price that you can afford.

  4. What it will cost you depends on the benefits you want or need. The cheapest way to get insurance is through a  group insurance (employer based).

If that is not an option and you need an individual family plan, the best thing to do is find an independant agent or broker near you and see what you can get. Be aware that maternity coverage will have a waiting period of 10 to 12 months. So if you want ot have a baby before then, you will need to contact your doctor and delivering hospital to set up payments for a cash discounted plan.

But, it is always best to have insurance-because the cost and expenses of having a baby do not stop with delivery!!

  5. It will really vary depending on the deductible you want as well as the coverage for both you and your husband.  It's a package deal.  Remember, most reputable plans will have a waiting period to give birth, so plan ahead.
