Insurance questions?

My boyfriend was driving my car (he isn't insured on my policy but he has got fully comprehensive so he can drive other cars) yesterday when he was hit in the rear by a third-party at a traffic light and he subsequently went into the back of the person in front. I've phoned my insurance today and they said that my car isn't covered and he needs to go through his insurance to make a claim but it will only be a third-party claim. Does that mean that my boyfriend will have to pay to get my car fixed even though the third party went into his car? Also, will my boyfriend have to pay for the car he hit even though it was a result of getting hit in the rear?
