Integrate upstream or downstream - what does that mean?

I'm studying for my marketing test and it's written in my book "....suppliers can integrate downstream" or "...buyers can integrate upstream".

  1. They can go against the grain and do unique things . That is upstream. Or they can go along with the way things have always been. That is going downstream.
