  1. I sound like a broken record in here, but I recommend Douglas Hofstadter's "I am a Strange Loop" Complicated math and cutting edge theories about how the mind works, meet personal tragedy and questions of an afterlife. Hard to go wrong with this book. For a slightly less personal odyssey perhaps "Godel, Escher, Bach" by the same author.

  2. Proust's book "In Search of Lost Time" is very good.

Or what about "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?"  http://www.amazon.com/Zen-Art-Motorcycle...

Or going the intellectual sci-fi route, Douglas Adams wrote a great series which starts with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

I recently read Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and thoroughly enjoyed them.  They're more of a back-to-nature, olden-days look at America.

I hope this helps, good luck!

  3. If he likes George Orwell, then you should also get him Animal Farm (if he hasn't read it). Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut is a perfect combo of both Orwell-style writing and philosophical ideas. Basically, anything along the lines of satire will be a good gift. :D

  4. Ask him about his favorite authors...then find out which books from those authors he doesn't have and which of those he wants and go from there...........
