Intelligence, CIA???? please help..

I'm young. But i want to know, when I go into college, how exactly people end up in the CIA or in the field of Intelligence. I heard Mike McConnell give a speech at Furman. I believe he went into the Navy, but I'm not sure. But how did he end up as the Director of National Intelligence; by just kissing up? Or by pure, natural intelligence. And is the only way to be in that sort of "field" if you will, is to enter the army, navy, or air force???

Joining the military as an intelligence officer is probably the best, if not the easiest method of getting in. The primary reason is that before you can even get into intelligence you have to have some major background checks done.
