Intelligent Americans, Does it embarrass you that according to recent polls...?

Question

48% of Americans reject evolution and a further 2% don't know

20% believe that the sun revolves around the earth and a further 9% don't know

20% can't locate the US on a world map

75% have no idea about the population of the US

Only 32% know that July 4th is independence day

And 19% don't know what country the US gained independence from, with a further 2% saying it was France and a furher 3% saying something else.

I'm from England, and some of the information on here just makes me laugh.

If you're from England, how do you know our stats?  But I will say that I've seen people be shown a picture of our Vice President and they didn't know who he was.

I can't feature an intellectual taking a poll, but can feature bored people taking one.  Of course it embarrasses me.  I'm just glad it's not me, glad I was educated decades ago before public education was dumbed down, when it was challenging.

Oh my god...i'm italian and about us we say "we are uninformed" but this is too unbelievable. I don't want to insult your country and the people, but i tougth that some Americans are uninfored when i read  (here) that the pollution is not important, that the global warming is an invention of Gore and that the environmentalist are stupid. In Europe this problem is very current and we don't think we are stupid.

But, in italy, there is a big problem with the mathematics, so, i'm going to be silent.

OK just on the evolution thing - if people have no reason or substantive thinking behind their beliefs (any) - it's one thing.  However, evolution is a WEAK theory with shifting explanations - such as punctuated equilibrium to explain the lack of progressive forms fossil evidence.  Intelligent design is a more plausible theory and isn't presented alongside of evolution ONLY because of the ACLU and the separation of church and state.  I have a university education and have studied both sides of the issue.  It takes more faith to believe in the theory of evolution with it's lack of scientific evidence.

Gallup poll is an additionally flawed scientific method.

If you had to take those polls, would you really fill out the right answer? It's enough of a joke as it is that someone asked those questions, and answering them as far off base as you can is funnier. We are not stupid, we have a sense of humor.

It doesn't just embarras me, it depresses me and makes me think our nation is in very deep trouble.  I wish we had a decent educational system, but the religious and the multicultural have gutted it.

It is pathetic. The most pathetic part is it almost appears Americans are this dumb by design. It makes them easier to lie to and manipulate, and less likely to fight back.  Come live amongst them for a while. You will find that there is no poll that can plumb the depths of their stupidity.

Wow. That's horrifying. I'd like to blame the education system, but.. some people are just obstinate in their ignorance.

I talked to a guy once who sincerely, honestly believed that all non-white races are really descendants of aliens (yeah, from space) who also built the pyramids. It was unbelievable. When I said "but, that's absurd!", he was surprised!!

There are some (many more than I think it seems) really insane, ignorant people out there.

Does it embarrass you that only 69% of Brits know that the Earth revolves around the sun? Compared to America"s percentage, that must mean you folks are dumber than us.  And this is using your own statistics.

Yes, I am always disgusted when faced with the lack of general knowledge people world-wide should know as a matter of course.  But for the statistics to mean anything, you'd have to find a source that asks people world-side the same questions.  I'm going to look for one right now.
