Intense menstrual pain - normal?

Hi all,

I'm 20 and have had my fair share of menstrual pain.

This morning I woke up fine, jumped in the shower and discovered it was time of month. I got out of the shower and went to my room when waves of nausa started coming over me (I never ever get sick even when drinking alcohol...)

Then this massive abdominal cramp started getting stronger and stronger and my body was dry retching but I hadn't eaten or had anything to drink so I couldn't throw up.

My whole face and lips went white as chalk and my entire body was shaking and I was dizzy. I started getting really really hot like my blood was boiling so I changed from my dressing gown to a summer dress. I was in so much pain I had to sit on the bathroom floor over the bathtub, I was like an injured animal.

Mum made me lay down in bed and then I got really really cold (The temperature outside was normal, not hot, not cold) even under 3 blankets.

Anyway I took some nurofen plus and some magnesium powder and slept it off for afew hours. I'm just wondering if this is normal for menstrual pain to get this bad or if it could be something else? It was just so out of the blue and so sudden, and I have never, ever, experienced such excuciating pain in my life.

Sorry it's long!

  1. Are you using Tampons cuz it kind of sound like TSS..............Read the tampon instruction and read about toxic shock syndrome............if not maybe you should see a doctor.

  2. for some people that might be normal but for it to come on so suddenly is kind of unusual...if it continues i would go see a doctor...

if you choose to go see a doctor be sure to include and recent change in diet, sleep patterns, physical activity etc.

  3. Severe period pains should always be investigated to check for a treatable cause. As a rough guide, if you've had severe period pain (known as dysmenorrhoea) since around the time your periods first started, it's less likely a particular cause will be found.

There are exceptions to this. Conditions such as endometriosis can sometimes cause severe pain from an early age (although the pain typically gets worse as the disease does more damage with each monthly cycle). Other causes include fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease and sometimes a narrowing of the cervix. Bear in mind, though, that period pains are rarely a sign of disease, especially in younger women.

If the pain interferes with your life, preventing you from working, going to school or coping with daily tasks, I would recommend you consult with a doctor/gynaecologist for further evaluation.

    Good luck :)

  4. yup thats normal

  5. I think I have experienced the same pain you've been through, I was only 13 then. Well, I got over it after some rest, and I think it's been 3 or 4 yrs, I never had that pain again.

But still, I could be wrong. Please consult a doctor immediately if you experience this pain again.

  6. It is completely normal. I'm 21 and have the same problems while menstruating. I'll have the shakes, be cold while everyone is sweating. be nauseated, sensitive to smell all that stuff.

Just be careful with what you eat to help with the nauseation, and drink plenty of Sprite or 7Up. I eat granola bars and cereal to help with the nauseation.

    Feel better!

  7. everyone's periods are different

some people have three days of bleeding, no pain

    some have seven, intense pain

so this could be completely normal for you

but if your never get checked out by a doctor

conditions like 'polycystic ovarian syndrome' = very difficult periods

  8. yep ive had that. i even resorted to a summer dress like you haha but i had hit flushes the whole time :(

  9. I had the exact same thing, but I was shivering and sweaty from the pain and couldnt move or think about anything other than the pain. My skin was pasty and even my hair was damp from the sweat, it was sooooooo horrible. I was unfortunately at my grandmother's house, and she is only into natural things, so she didnt allow me to take pain killers, so i waited for her to go out and then i raided the medicine cabinet and got my nurofen. After taking nurofen the pain never came back over the time of the period, but when i got back home to sydney, i went straight to the doc, they did ultrasounds and found nothing, but you should get yourself checked out to make sure its all ok, as painful periods can be a sign of endometriosis. Just make sure you've got plenty of nurofen/naprogesic on hand before your period comes until you get checked. They doctors can put you on the pill to stop the pain if its something regular for you. Hope that helps, and your not the only one, i feel sorry for you, i dont get it anymore thanks god. Good luck and take care :)

  10. You should call your doctor.

  11. For me it's normal unfortunately. Not every time but sometimes like that. I had similar pains when i was in a long car trip (gladly wasn't me driving!) and it was h**l.

Just gotta remember to take painkiller as soon as periods start or just before. Ive started jogging and excercise do help with the pains! Not ofc when the pains are bad but when theyre not so bad i go jogging and i feel better :) Also hot drinks and hot shower helps. Heat helps with the cramps
