Inter Europe rail pass?

Question

Anyone used an inter europe rail pass before? How do they work/ what do you have to do, do you book your journeys or just get on any train you like? Would have a months all zones pass in the summer. Anyone encountered any problems or got any tips. Would like to visit France, Germany, Austria, Italy. Thanks

You can buy a Eurorail pass for all zones that is good for hopping trains.  I looked into doing that last summer but didn't do it.
