Inter Milan 1 - 2 Schalke 04: Wesley Sneijder devastated with defeat in the UEFA Champions League
Inter Milan playmaker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wesley-Sneijder-c36799 expressed his disappointment on being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Schalke 04. The midfielder admitted that Inter missed a lot of opportunities against the German opposition
and were unable to take their chances at the Veltins-Arena in the second-leg.
Defending champions, Inter Milan, were knocked out of the competition on Wednesday, April 13, in the quarterfinals after losing 7-3 on aggregate to Schalke 04.
Sneijder stated that his side created more chances but failed to convert them. The Nerazzurri needed to score more than four times to progress to the last four but instead lost the match 2-1 after Benedikt Howedes scored the winner
in the 81st minute for the home side.
The Dutchman insisted that Inter had most of the possession in the game and were dominating the match but they missed the major opportunities coming their way. He added that the Germans were sitting back to defend which made it
much more difficult for Inter.
“We created several chances to open the scoring, but we were unable to convert any of those opportunities. It's a shame that we failed to score, because we were in charge on the pitch. We knew that we had to score five goals after
they broke the deadlock on the counterattack. We then tried to just win the match, but that didn't work out either,” the midfielder was quoted as saying.
The former Real Madrid player said that he was disappointed on losing as he expected his team to win against a team like Schalke, who have had a poor season in the German Bundesliga. But the playmaker remained optimistic and vowed
to come back stronger next year.
“This is a disappointment, because we didn't expect to lose against Schalke. However, it's not a disgrace that we're eliminated. You see the titleholders stumbling in the quarter-finals pretty often,” the Dutch international concluded.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan have had a poor season after winning the treble last season. They are third in the Italian Serie A behind leaders AC Milan and Napoli with 63 points and are five points adrift of the top.
