Inter Milan midfielder says poor form is down to injuries
Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso says that his side's lack of form in Serie A this season is due to a spate of injuries which have caused several first-team players to be forced out of action.
The European champions have been struggling in on the domestic stage this season. After a string of poor results, they are now nine points behind leaders AC Milan in the Serie A standings.
In the UEFA Champions League, they are also at risk of failing to top their group and avoid playing the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round as, while they are level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, the English Premier League side
have a better head-to-head record.
However, they have confirmed their place in the last 16 of the competition after Cambiasso netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Dutch champions FC Twente at the San Siro on Wednesday 24 November, and Cambiasso says that the victory will give the side more
self-belief that they can retain their European crown.
He told Sky Sport: "The dressing room never doubted the potential of this side. This difficult moment is only down to the amount of injuries affecting the side.
"This qualification can give us some confidence, as well as some more time as we await more players to return from injury."
Inter only had five of the 11 players who started last season's final against Bayern Munich available for the clash with Twente — Samuel Eto’o, Wesley Sneijder, Javier Zanetti, Lucimar Ferreira da Silva ('Lucio') and Goran Pandev.
They have won three of their Champions League games so far, drew their away game against Twente and lost 3-1 to Spurs at White Hart Lane on 2 November.
