Inter Milan pair critical after defeat to AS Roma
Inter Milan defenders Maicon Douglas Sisenando and Cristian Chivu criticized their team's performance against AS Roma on Saturday.
The Italian champions picked up their first league defeat of the season in the Italian capital. Mirko Vucinic scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute after Inter failed to convert several scoring chances during the game.
Chivu, who has made 85 league appearances for Inter since joining in 2007, approached new manager Rafael Benitez during the game to express his frustration with the team's tactics.
“If it keeps going like this, then I’m going,” Chivu said as he recalled the exchange with Benitez after the game. “Either you make them run or take me off.”
Benitez' team enjoyed a number of chances during the game, with Dejan Stankovic clipping the bar early in the second half, but it was Roma who created the most chances, earning their first victory of the competitive season.
Maicon blames lack of focus
Roma went into the game with only two points from four league matches, but Inter failed to exploit Roma's poor form. Maicon blamed Inter's lack of sharpness for the defeat.
"We had the opportunity to get three points, but the attitude we took to this match was not good,” the frustrated right-back told the press after the game.
“It was better to lose 3-0 than to fall in stoppages. Unfortunately, we made so many mistakes and Roma took advantage. This was not the same Inter seen against Bari. We must focus on getting back on track. This time we lacked a cool head up front and I saw
too much egotism in attack.”
Despite widespread claims that Benitez will struggle to match former Inter manager Jose Mourinho's successes with the club, the defending champions are currently at the top of the Serie A table with ten points from five matches.
Inter hosts Werder Bremen in the Champions League on Wednesday.
