Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder on Manchester United’s wish-list
Dutch maestro Wesley Sneijder is being linked with a move to Premier League side Manchester United. United are reportedly vying to sign the FC Internazionale’s playmaker in a search of bringing a world class player at Old Trafford.
To many, this news might not come as a surprise, as the Red Devils have also previously tried to lure the midfield genius to Manchester.
In the aftermath of Wayne Rooney’s saga last week, the club has vowed to their fans that around 100 million pounds of cash will be available for spending in the transfer market.
Although Rooney has penned a new five-year contract with the English giants, it is not without assurance from the club’s owners that Manchester United will try to live up to its great history of bringing world-class footballers
at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old Dutchman might be the perfect choice for manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who will be looking to find replacements in midfield for the aging Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. The midfield veterans have been performing season
after season for the men in red, and are close to their retirement.
United have not been able to field a 20-goals-a-season midfield player in their ranks, and have heavily depended on their forwards’ goals in the previous seasons. Fergie would love to have a midfielder comparable to the likes of
Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard, who is able to net in goals from the centre of the pitch and share the scoring burden of the strikers. The United manager’s wish might be fulfilled if he is successful in acquiring the services of Sneijder.
Wesley enjoyed a wonderful last season with the Italian champions, Inter Milan. Under the management of Jose Mourinho, the team from San Siro managed to score the treble. The Nerazzurri won the Italian Serie A, the Coppa Italia
and the UEFA Champions League; a truly marvellous achievement, with the former Real Madrid player playing a pivotal role in Inter’s success.
Sneijder continued his fantastic form in the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa, scoring 5 goals for the Netherlands along the road to the final. The midfielder helped his team knock out World Cup favourites Brazil in the
quarter-finals, before losing to Spain in the final.
Due to his exceptional performances in the past season, the Dutch midfielder is among the favourites to win the FIFA Ballon D’Or this year.
Although Sneijder has stated that he will remain committed to Inter Milan, the prospect of playing in the Barclay’s Premier League, and with United ready to offer a lucrative deal, might tempt him to make a switch to England.
