Question:

Interactive Radar Online?

I've noticed most of the weather stations are now using a software package to handle their radar. They're able to estimate when a part of a storm will hit various cities/communities and population to be impacted, they can query and area for average rainfall or hail size, toggle wind direction, zoom to nearly any level, etc.

It all seems to be pretty standard capabilities of Doplar, is there any website that give you real time interactive radar that supports these features?

I'd really like to be able to see when the leading edge of a storm is going to hit my neighborhood, I'm sure the other features could be useful as well.

  1. Your basic weather radar will just give you the basic stuff.  If you want to be able what the storms may be producing (large hail, damaging winds or has a TVS signature)  you will have to pay for these radars.  One that is cheep is called weathertap.  They have a radar with storm tracking.  It is very nice and i have been using it for a while now.  The other more expensive is from accuweather I used to use this one but they are too expensive now.   Weather tap is about $7.00 a month while accuweather is  over $100 a year.

    Wethertap

    Accuweather

    National Weather Service

    http://www.weather.gov

  2. You can buy a radar analysis package at www.grlevelx.com; but for the casual observer weather.gov is more than adequate.

  3. There are several online radars that you may use that can be quite helpful. These are free to use and are almost as good as the radar software that you would have to pay for.

    Online radar:

    http://www.wunderground.com/radar/map.as...

    http://www.intellicast.com/National/Rada...

*For each of them, just click on an area on the map to zoom in on your preferred location. My favorite of these is "wunderground" because it has the capability to not only show reflectivity and velocity, but also echo tops, VIL (Vertically Integrated Liquid) and a velocity azimuth display which is very helpful for analyzing a storm cell.

    Software radar:

    http://www.grlevelx.com/

    http://www.interwarn.com/sldesc.html

    http://www.weathertap.com/

*You get a limited time free trial for each of these in order to test them out to see how good they are. My favorite of these is grlevelx, but weathertap is a close second. I use grlevelx very often. I haven't had a chance to try out interwarn.com yet. After the free trial expires, you can choose to purchase them. The websites list the prices of each.

  4. the closest i know of is at the national weather service website, weather.gov. it ain't got everything you want but it does have zooming in and wind direction (velocity mode)

  5. Yes, there are myriad (many) sites that give you Java based real-time radar images.  Also,  you can google and type in let's say,   Oklahoma City area radar weather or any city like that.
