I have DSL internet, and i wish to have it also on my xbox. The only problem with that is my modem/router/computer is in the basement and my tv/xbox360 is on my top floor. I don't have the wireless thing for the xbox, and i'm not shure i'd get it as i don't even know if it could pick up the internet from the basement. One interesting thing i found out is the previous owners of the house had 2 phone lines, and we only have one. Would it be possible to somehow wire an ethernet cable to go through the existing phone line straight up to the tv room? I know a phone cable has 4 wires on it even though 2 aren't used, i beleive, and looking through the connector of the ethernet cable i only see 4 cables. Couldn't i take a ethernet cable in the basement, strip off the connector and strip the wires on one end, connect it to the old phone line, then upstairs take the wires from the old jack and attatch them to an ethernet cable, then to the xbox?

  1. Yes it can be done.

    See this site for instructions

  2. Only, if the phone lines are cat3, that is, 4 untisted pair (8 wires). Sometimes, when there are 2 phone lines, they use category 3 wiring, which consist of 8 wire. You will get 10mbps through them, if you are very lucky, you will get 100mpbs through it. And thats ONLY if you set the wires to be point-to-point.....it will not work on the same line.

You can run a serial signal horribly slow through the line but it may cost you more money in equipment than its worth...thats is if there are only 4 cables.

    I suggest a

    Linksys game adapter....

    OR

Snaking Cat5e\6 STP cable through the wall....just tie the telephone cord to the ethernet cable and pull it though.

Additionally, you can use a power-line adapter, but reliability is very, very, low...

    There may be a solution....not tested though...called

Intel's AnyPoint Home Network which will use regular phone networking, but these would be SUB-Tbase10 speeds.....which may defeat the point of have dsl at all....since dialup from the xbox would be a lot faster...

  3. Yes, you can- it just won't be up to standard, would be prone to interference, and wouldn't support the higher speeds of ethernet.

Specifically, you want to wire lead 1, 2, 3, and 6.
