For those who have been on the moon since last Wednesday, the race in question was an extraordinary triple dead-heat between Killishin Masai, Droopys Djokovic and Ayamzagirl – the first of its kind to be broadcast live on television.
Sponsors of the race, Coral, have been quick to make the most of the media interest, which has spread to Australia and New Zealand,  by scheduling a re-match between the three dogs at Romford on Friday. The marathon invitation, which is scheduled for 8.48pm on Friday’s all-open card, has been snapped up by Sky Sports, who are scheduled to show all the build-up and the race itself live on their 24-hour rolling news channel.
Dave Lawrence, producer of Sky Sports’ greyhound racing coverage said yesterday: “I’ve been speaking to Lindsay McCombie, senior planner on Sky Sports News, and everyone is very keen to get this on air.
“The likelihood is that a reporter will be joined by Errol Blyth, who also assisted in December’s similar coverage of the Jimmy Lollie record bid at Hove. Obviously there’s already a live SIS feed in situ, and the pictures will be taken using the normal Coral TV coverage. It should be a fantastic spectacle.”
Many punters have been quick to get their money on the outcome of the race, with plenty of bets placed, including a few shrewdies asking for prices on another triple dead-heat, which is unofficially a 1000-1 shot.
The officials at Romford have announced that admission for the meeting will be free for the public, and are expecting huge numbers of people through the gate.
