I am creating a media room in my basement and I am looking to use an HD projector to provide the video. I don't know a lot about them so I was wondering if I could get a few tips. I know I want it to be able to be 16:9 and I have about a 100" to work with...the projector will be about 11' from the wall.

  1. Well ... HD can mean 720p or 1080p. Both are available starting at about $1000 and $2000 respectively. You don't want a "business" projector ... so focus on those designed for "home theatre".

What you propose is quite "doable" although you can save a bit of money and complexity by finding a projector that can be mounted on a shelf at the back of the room. That means -- ideally -- you want a projector with vertical lens shift capacity. See the links for info on this and other terminology.

No projector is perfect / best at everything, so you will need to determine your priorities. Prices vary fairly widely so there are better choices for certain needs. The reviews are a great place to "get your feet wet". I highly recommend doing lot's of reading before jumping into anything specific.

Investigate the projector calculator at the 2nd link ... it helps to define what projector will work in what room (with projectors this is particulalry important since it sometimes seems that everything depends on everything else (i.e. screen size, viewing distance, screen height, projector location, etc).

See the reviews and info at the two links. I particularly recommend the comparative reviews at the first site (e.g. the annual review of 1080p projectors at the upper right), and the recommended home theatre projectors at the second (link near the top of the main page).

Screens are a good DIY project (~$100 or less) since commercial screens acn be into the $thousands.

Hope that gives a starting place.

  2. Goto your local high fi store and tell them what your looking for. They should be able to set up a demo on a projector in your price range. They might even install for free. My shop I go to does. Plus any problems they can help you right away. I had a receiver go bad and they gave me one to use while it was getting fixed. Ask questions.

  3. this is a good tool based on your needs it search for a projector !

    http://www.projectorcentral.com/projecto...

you only need to fill the parameters like price range, contrast, resolution, distance to be projected, video format 16:9 or 4:3, ect...

you mount a cheap screen or paint the wall with matted paint thats if the wall is smooth and flat.
