Interested in an Apple Computer?

I have my eye on an Apple ibook 3G Clamshell, I remember really liking the Mac OS from years ago. They're really inexpensive and I can find them everywhere....however... My boyfriend has a modern Dell laptop, and it's got 80GB, this Apple has 10GB.....Is this computer obsolete? Apparently they have wireless internet, and can be upgraded to the point of operating most modern microsoft documents/apps. All I want it for is general school work and internet access, no movies, music, gaming, or videos. Here are the specs.....what does this stuff mean?!

300Mhz G3

96MB of RAM

24X CD-ROM Drive

Mac OS 9.2

  1. That's an older mac.  I don't know how much you're paying for it so its difficult to say whether its a good deal or not.

96MB of RAM is not a lot, even for web browsing purposes (some flash heavy and video sites need the extra memory).  Even newer versions of office and other productivity software requires much more memory and a faster processor.

Personally I'd recommend just getting a refurbished or gently used macbook.

  2. Hey its ok for u coz u only wanna use it for ur school work, it means that the processor it has got ha a speed of processing of 300 Mega Hertz with Random access memory of 96 megabytes and can run pc CD-ROMs which is best for school work such as spreadsheet and word documents. You may face a little problem such as you might feel it to be slower then any ordinary PC but not much so you have to bear that!

  3. To be brutally honest this is probably going t be the worst computer you can even buy, 300Mhz is ridiculously slow and you probably cant even run any modern Mircosoft app with that. Below I added a link to Dell which has a good back to school computer for $500 which can run ANY modern microsoft apps without problem and you can even show off your 80gb hard drive to your boyfriend ;)

The 300Mhz is th processor speed running at 300 megahertz

96MB RAM is 96 megabytes of ram(even slow computers have 256+ nowadays)

The 24x is the speed the disk drive works

Mac OS 9.2 is the version of the operating system it has.

I also added a link to show some basic computer terms so you can learn :D

  4. For what you want these settings are perfect! You might want to check out the new apple though... They have so much great stuff for it! I would suggest looking into getting a new macbook! Read this article on a future OS release from Apple! http://www.mymediatutorials.com/news/sof...

  5. This computer might serve your minimal needs, but it's way way out of date.    It's going to be SUPER slow - 300MegaHertz is like 10 times slower than the current normal processing speeds of 2.4 or 2.6 GIGAHertz.  96MB of RAM is way little.  Nobody even uses CD_ROM drives any more, they're all DVD writers.  And Mac's OS is up to 10.5 (Leopard).

The problem with that is, when you need to upgrade a program, it's hard to do it sometimes.  It's much easier to use an older program with a newer OS.  How much did you want to spend?

I do recommend Mac over PC, and I say this as a lifelong PC user who made the switch to Mac only about 7 weeks ago.  I got a MacBook - these computers are not that expensive, and will last you a long time.  You can run Mac OSX or Windows on it, and I do both - it's like having two computers for the price of one!  Mine is a total hot rod, and it cost $1300.  You could probably pick one up for less than a thousand with a little less horsepower than I have, and it would last you for years and years.
