There are two basic kinds : scanning electron microscopes and transmission electron microscopes.

An electron microscope cannot be used to study living tissues.

An electron microscope uses the deflection of electrons (the tiniest particles) to map out the surface of a prepared sample. Samples are generally stained with a heavy metal, like Osmium to help them survive the violent act of microscopy.
