  1. This and the other castles he built drove Bavaria to the brink of bankruptcy.  It took a long time to reap the rewards and long past Ludwig's death.  It is also rumoured that Ludwig was homosexual.

  2. It is not a historical castle. It was built in the thirties, I believe. The name means New Swan Stone.  It was built on what people think a real fairytale castle should look like.

  3. Disney's Cinderella castle is modeled after it.

It also took 14 wood workers 4 years to complete all the carvings for King Ludwig's bedroom alone! We visited the castle last year it is really beautiful.

Try this website is has some really good information!!

  4. The castle contains a small opera theatre where a Wagner opera is staged every year.  The audience is very exclusive and you will not get a ticket.

  5. It was NOT built in the 30's. It was built in the 1860's. It was one of King Ludwig's many castles. Some people believe that King Ludwig was murdered because he was pouring so much money into his castles. Ironically, enough today Germany brings in millions of dollars a year off of tourism of his castles. One interesting thing about Neuschwanstein is that Hans Christian Andersen wrote some of his fairy tales in the castle. Also, King Ludwig only lived there for six weeks before his death and the castle was never completely finished. If you are going to be visiting Germany, then Neuschwanstein castle is a must see!

  6. It is the most fotographed building in Germany.

The foundation stone for the castle was laid on September 5, 1869 at the behest of King Ludwig II. of Bayern (Bavaria, southern Germany.) Ludwig's personal desire for isolation reflected on his political attitude, which was not well-received with the Bavarian government. He was dethroned on June 8, 1886 on grounds of supposed insanity. The second attempt to arrest him succeeded four days later on the 12th. On the 13th he and his doctor were found dead in Lake Starnberg. Suicide? Murder? Assassination? The mystery was never solved.

The castle was reopened to the public on August 1, 1886, less than two months after the king's death, but it was never completed. The castle remains today in the possession of the family of King Ludwig. They own the copyrights to the truly fabulous artworks (such as pictures) housed within the castle walls, which is why they do not allow cameras to be used inside.

  7. The castle is beautiful with intersting design/architecture.  This was the castle that inspired Walt Disney (the castles in Disneyworld and Disneyland are a replica of the Neuschwanstein castle)

Sorry to bring in to you but expect to be disappointed because at the beginning of the tour of the castle the tour guide says the castle is only half-complete because construction was halted after King Ludwig's death.

No pictures are allowed inside the castle or else you get kicked out.

The inside of the castle is very beautiful (because of the colour) but the tour is much shorter than other castle tours I went on because of the halt in construction.

My family and I felt cheated and disappointed after getting a tour of the castle (less than 30 minutes).  We agreed that other castle tours (such as the Wartburg castle in Eisenach, which, was actually complete) were way better.

In my opinion, I would recommend going to the castle (walking up a hill and taking pictures) but the tour of the castle made me feel the castle was overrated.
