  1. Alsatian Costume

The way people were dressed determined the social category to which they pertained until the 19th century. Naturally poor peasants and wealthy city-dwellers did not mix and their dress clearly acted as a social differentiation. This changed progressively after 1820; the French Revolution had taken place and people began to acquire a new sense of identity. At that time, one's style of dress rather than defining social status became a reflection of political inclinations, religious beliefs, age and feelings.

The various elements of the Alsatian costume were inspired by the style of the French nobility and bourgeoisie and adapted to local needs with variations from one area to another. Women wore white shifts with ruffled cuffs and collars and long skirts - befitting modest, hard-working peasants. Interestingly, colours played a religious part - ribbons adorning the skirts were black if you were Protestant whereas Catholics wore brighter, less austere colours.

Men also had their own dress codes - black trousers with six gold buttons signified bachelor status. Shirts were white linen, waistcoats were red and jackets were black.

These traditional costumes went out of fashion long ago but can still be seen in folklore musuems, museums of life in Alsace or at festivals and celebrations.

the alsacian music is very folkloric ,it makes you want to get up and dance .... most village, town have their own group of musician of all ages from drums to trumpets passing through  flutes

  2. The fastest and best I can give you is the reference in Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace

As for the traditional clothing here is a site that can give you some good info...

    http://costumes.alsace.site.voila.fr/

It is mainly in french tho' you have an english link...

This third website will give you information on tourism and sports...

    http://www.tourisme-alsace.com/?lg=en

As to music, there really isn't a page available as such... I would say that the music is traditionally similar to that in Germany... bands and regional dances are similar on both sides of the Rhine...

Hope this will help you out!

    :-)
