Interim GM Chad Buchanan no longer in Portland Trail Blazer future scheme of things – NBA Update
After the unexpected firing of the former General Manager of the Portland Trail Blazers, Rich Cho on May 23, the franchise had started their search to fill the spot that is currently handled by interim GM Chad Buchanan. However,
it’s been now three months and the Trail Blazers are still undecided on the new candidate for the job.
The franchise might have failed to find the right person for the post, but in Friday’s meeting team President Larry Miller and owner Paul Allen had settled for one thing and that is Buchanan will not be considered for the GM job.

Both Miller and Allen want to appoint someone, who have the relevant experience or had spent extended time in the “No.2.” position. After the meeting Buchanan told that, “They’d like someone with more experience — I totally understand
that. I wasn’t shocked.”
Buchanan, whohas been with the Trail Blazers for seven years now, never worked in the capacity of a permanent GM. In fact, the highest permanent position he ever held, was that of the Director of the College Scouting.
Buchanan said, “I didn’t go into this with the intention of trying to be the next GM. I was asked to fill the role and I was more than willing to do it. It was a great experience for me and I’m honoured they gave me the opportunity.
I’ve been around this business long enough to know what teams are looking for at different stages of development. Where we’re at ... we’re trying to win a championship sooner rather than later and to hire someone with my experience
is a risk. I understand that.”
Until the Trail Blazers will find the right candidate, Buchanan will remain their interim GM. His role with the franchise will not finish even after the selection of the new GM, as indicated by Miller. Buchanan will help the Trail
Blazers in selecting the next GM, as Paul and Miller wants him actively involved in the search.

Buchanan is also happy to contribute for the Trail Blazers in whatever way he can. As during the Friday meeting he made two recommendations to team President, who believed that they can be good hires. So far Portland’s management haven’t mention the list of
the candidates which they will pursue for the GM post.
Miller remained tight lipped over the questions of possible candidates, but he did acknowledge that up till now they haven’t interviewed anyone. Moreover, both Miller and Paul didn’t mention what characteristics they are seeking
in the new GM.
However, this clearly means one thing and that is Buchanan failed to meet their criteria, but they appreciated his work. It was Buchanan, who guided the Trail Blazers through the previous NBA Draft. During which Portland traded
away Andre Miller and Rudy Fernandez, in exchange for them the franchise got point guard Raymond Felton.
In addition to that Portland picked Duke University point guard Nolan Smith as 21st overall with their first-round pick. His contribution didn’t just end there, as he also helped the management to take the decision of
extending oft-injured centre Greg Oden’s contract.
Aside from all of this, the task for the new GM is not going to be easy once the lockout gets over. The GM had to decide about the future of the looming free agent pacts like Raymond Felton, Gerald Wallace and Nicolas Batum. Plus
the new GM has to take several crucial short and long term decisions that will definitely affect the future of the Trail Blazers.
