  1. If you're using the same kind of paint (latex on latex for example) and the shade is not too different, then you generally don't need to prime first.

If you're changing shades radically (dark over light and vice-versa) priming prevents bleed-through of the old color. It also helps the new paint adhere better if you're going latex over enamel. (I use enamel in kitchen and bath because it cleans up better.)

Also, if you have large-ish patched/repaired areas on the walls (small spackle is ok) then you should prime those so they don't show.

It also depends on how good your paint is. My neighbor the painting contractor uses nothing but Kelly-Moore paint. I've used it for many years and have been happy with it - including not needing to prime in most cases.

  2. It does depend on how the condition of the walls are.If they have stains, water marks, and what kind of paint you are covering. Paint won't stick to walls that have a slick surface to them.Like a kitchen or Bathroom. Those normally are painted with a semi-gloss or gloss. They have to be roughed up before you paint or the new paint won't stick. They need either sanded, washed with a de-glosser,or primed.Same goes if you have oil based paint on the walls, and you are repainting with a water based,or latex paint. The new paint won't stick unless sanded, washed,or primed. It is up to you on how many times you want to paint it. Do it right the first time. Byee

  3. It helps cover up the existing colors and allows you to lay down fewer coats of the actual color. When purchasing the paint, ask about tinting the primer and it will make your job even easier.

  4. It depends on the condition of the walls.  It is a good idea if there is a chance of anything bleeding through the new paint such as nicotine stains or if the walls are very dirty or if you are trying to cover a dark color.

  5. it gives the best look so take that extra step

  6. I think that it's more important to make sure that the walls are all washed down prior to painting.  A solution of TSP and water works well for cleaning walls, then a quick rinse.  You may have to use 2 coats of the finish to get the desired color if you are painting over darker colors.  If these are new drywall you should always use a primer first.
