Question:

Intermediate golfer wondering if I should buy new knock off irons or a last season model?I play 20-40 per year

I have played for 5-6 years with current knock offs. Shoot in low 90's so I want to upgrade and see if new clubs will add length/control and get me into 80's consistently. I felt knock offs were good to start with, wondering if they could be a good 2nd set of irons.

Do not want to spend 800-1200 for iron set. I am not good enough yet. So wondering if good knock off set or last year model would be better route.

Thanks

  1. Definitely go for an older set over a knock-off set.

    The knock-offs are knock-offs for a reason.

They don't feel as good, they don't hit as good.

Knock-offs will probably end up breaking or coming apart.

I would go for a set of irons from the 2000 season over this year's knock-offs.

  2. To go lower you don't have to spend a lot of money. A buddy of mine just bought some of last years Cobra S9's and they were only $400. I will advice strongly against buying knockoffs...you sound serious about your game so go ahead and get you a good set of clubs and practice, practice, practice...

  3. Knock-offs are a very risky buy. They might be OK, they might be junk.

Get an older set, or even a new close-out set. But, get fitted for your set, it makes a difference. I think April is still the big month where at a lot of places you can get fitted for free if you buy an iron set.

  4. I would stay away from knock offs. Look at pre owned sets (Callaway, Cobra, Taylor Made etc), or last years models available at low prices. The pre owned, or older models will last much longer than knock offs. They also have some trade in value when you want to upgrade. Knock offs have no re sale value at all.

  5. Buy last years models. Some of the pros play models from the 90s, so why shouldn't you?

  6. You could get a decent set of irons on ebay for half the price they go in a golf store.  What I did was demo a set at the golf shop and bought a set off ebay.  Saved 400 bucks.  I play standard length and lie angle anyway, so I didn't have to be concerned about that at all.  Last years model will work fine.  You may find a model from last year that is still new.  I love Ebay!
