Question:

Intermittent errors and the Blue screen of death?

Ok, so I have just moved into a dorm and had to get an ethernet cable for the internet. Apparently, in order to install the ethernet cable I had to take off Norton Antivirus and put on a Cisco Clean Access agent using Symantec instead (Though the two are a part of the same company, they are not compatible). Ever since the IT put the new Symantec program onto my computer, intermittent "blue screen of death" errors keep appearing after anywhere between 10 minutes to an hour on the machine. I have not had the opportunity to get all of the bug check and driver info, since it is a mystery when the screen will show up. Any ideas?

  1. Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This  problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

  2. my computer did that till i replaced the ram, it may be that

i found that out after wiping the drive and it still gave me blue screen

  3. I had this problem with my laptop. Im sorry but its going to break soon! The blue screen of death means your computer is goin to breakk and and cant be repaired! im sorry

  4. Please do the chkdsk or scan disk

then try to boot the system using F8 and last known good configuration.

if this does not help , then reinstall the OS.

if that too does not help then  you may want to check if installation CD is giving error and not installing files.

Lastly your computer memory may have gone bad.

    Thanks

    good luck dear

  5. Symantec products tend to be bloated, expensive and buggy.

There are free altenetives such as AVG that will do the job for you.

In terms of your blue-screen error the common causes are hardware failure. The culpits in order of blame (ram, motherboard, psu, graphics card). However since you mention software recently changed I would look at a possible buffer over-run.

The best protection against a buffer over-run is to turn on hardware DEP (Data Execution Prevention).

Go into manage my computer. Advanced tab, click performance settings, under data execution prevention select "turn on for all programs".

That will prevent any buffer overruns. If that doesn't fix, clean install, still have a problem then replace one piece of hardware at a time in the order given above till you find the culprit.

  6. try running a virus scanner. but i dont think that will help. usually if you start to get the blue screen of death a lot, it means that your computer is unstable and it might stop working the next time you turn it on. you should back up all of your most important files to be ready when the computer crashes for good. then just reset your computer and restore the files you backed up. i recommend using a usb flash memory stick. but you can also use a system save point start>all programs> accessories>system tools>backup
