Google "Operation Mockingbird." You will find lots of info. They claimed they ended the program, as if.

  1. I did google "Operation Mockingbird" and went through the first 150 citations of the 42,800 mentions and could not find a credible online source.

The media manipulation actions of the CIA during the Cold War have been covered for years.  Most English language newspapers in foreign lands have some contributions from CIA sources.  Just as many political and labour organizations in foreign lands have been supported by CIA operatives.

Most top journalists do have CIA contacts to check information, but this certainly does not make them CIA agents because they contact CIA officers.

I would guess that anytime a reporter has information -- for example on the Glomar Explorer -- that a responsible journalist would check with the CIA or Pentagon or other source for information.

This is where the term "Glomarization" came from, when the CIA will neither deny or confirm making contact with journalists.

    Hope this answer helps you.

  2. I read CNN at one time actually had some Pentagon "advisors" in the Atlanta bureau as late as 1990, until indy media outted them.  Then CNN execs said they realized it was "innapropriate" and no longer had them on site.  LMAO.  how stupid.  Of course they are still there.

  3. I read in Wikipedia, "The word Mockingbird was first used by Deborah Davis' 1979 Katharine the Great. While Davis alleged that the media had been involved in propaganda activities, her book was controversial at the time, and has since been shown to have a number of erroneous assertions."

It looks like something they did during Cold War era mainly with foreign individuals. Or that's what I get from Wikipedia. But I don't see why would they need 'covert' operation using media so much now days. If you look at how they drummed up support for Iraq War they used media right out in open. They made misleading claims on major news outlets and weekend news shows...etc. They're very media savvy and Rumsfeld actually had monitored all the positive, negative stories about Iraq War.

The gov is getting increasingly media savvy, but with internet, blogging and more its getting easier and easier for people to see through any gov propaganda long as you try.

They don't need specific gov secret program with fancy code name when they're constantly learning new ways to use media to shift public opinion. I'm sure 'Operation Mockingbird' may have ended for real, but I don't see the point looking for covert programs when they're doing so much out in open already.

I think I'd be very surprised if they're actually using same 'Operation Mockingbird' campaign when the media landscape had changed so much since 1970s. With internet and independent journalism I don't see how 'Operation Mockingbird' can be in operation in 2008.
