  1. Both Xylem and Phloem are types of vascular tissues.  (Thus, you will only find xylem and phloem in vascular plants.)

Vascular tissues are responsible for the transport of materials throughout the plant body.

Xylem, which tends to be smaller in diameter than phloem, is responsible for the transport of water (and anything dissolved in the water).  Material transported by xylem moves against gravity, starting at the roots, and ending at the leaves.

Phloem, which is larger in diameter, is responsible for the transport of "food", or relatively large materials that are not readily dissolved in water.  Material transported by phloem moves with gravity, starting at the leaves (where photosynthesis occurs), and ending at the roots.
