International Association of Athletics Federation World Challenge at Kingston – Athletics Review
The International Association of Athletics Federation World Challenge in track and field has taken place on Sunday, May 8 at Jamaica, Kingston.
In the event there were some stunning performances but the praiseworthy attempts were of Carmelita Jeter, Kenia Sinclair, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Chris Brown.
In the Women’s 100 metre race, Jeter is an expert, as she clocked 10.86 seconds. Kelly-Ann Baptiste followed and clocked 10.94 seconds whereas the third rival was Sherone Simpson, who covered the distance in the recorded time of 11.07 seconds.
In the Men’s 100 metre, Asafa Powell was the race favourite and he finished off as eighth, as his time was 21.40. The 100 metre specialist from Antigua Daniel Bailey clocked 9.94 seconds. The local athlete, Yohan Blake ended up at 9.80 seconds, as Mike Rodgers
did it in 9.96 and Jamaican Mike Frater clocked 9.98. Olympic medallist Richard Thompson clocked 10.16 seconds and ranked seventh.
The 800 metre race, was won by Kenia Sinclair with a time of 1:59.98 minutes.
In the Women’s 200 metre race, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clocked 22.10 seconds and defeated Olympic winner Veronica Campbell-Brown, who ended up with 22.37 seconds.
The Women’s 400 metre race, Novlene Williams-Mills clinched it with 50.71 seconds, as Rosemarie Whyte clocked a bit behind her at 51.15 seconds. Kaliese Spencer was not too far as she had a time of 51.30 seconds. Natasha Hastings ranked fourth just with
the time of 51.53. The fifth contestant was Sanya Richards-Ross who clocked 51.62 seconds.
In the Men’s 400 metre hurdles race, Justin Gaymon ended up with a time of 48.58 seconds and defeated Kerron Clement who is the current World champion. This upset happened as Clement clocked a time of 48.74 seconds. However, Danny McFarlane an experienced
athlete on this track, covered the distance in 49.04 seconds.
The Men’s 400 metre race was won by Bahamas’ Chris Brown. He won with a time of 45.37 over Renny Quow, who is from Trinidad and clocked in 45.43. The Jamaican record holder Jermaine Gonzales finished off in 45.52 seconds.
In the Women’s 400 metre hurdle, Melaine Walker who is World champion and Olympic winner, covered the distance in the time of 55.60.
In the Men’s shot put, Adam Nelson, the former World champion achieved a new record by throwing 21.24 metres.
The meet ended after successful completion of the events. All the tracks were enjoyed and supported by the friendly spectators. They encouraged their favourite athletes during the event as they were entertained by their performances.
All the athletes are now targeting the major event of Daegu challenge, South Korea in August this year. It will be the important event to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
