International Football: Cannavaro says Terry made a Big Mistake
Cannavaro, the Italian captain who led his team to glory in the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany to World Cup, said that Terry’s England career might be over as long as Fabio Capello is in charge of the English team.
Cannavaro also captained Italy at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where the former-defending champions went out in the group stages under unceremonious circumstances. Italy failed to win any of their matches in the latest world cup as they drew against New Zealand and Paraguay while they lost their last group stage match to Slovakia.
Cannavaro’s inclusion in Italy’s World Cup squad for the 2010 tournament was criticized by many as the Italian defender is in the twilight of his career. Fabio Capello, who is currently England’s manager, coached Cannavaro during his time as Juventus’s manager as well as at Real Madrid, where he led the Spanish club to the La Liga title.
Capello is known amongst his peers and the football players that he has managed so far as a shrewd man who believes in zero compromises when it comes to discipline. However, Capello was not able to take England to World Cup glory. England went out of the FIFA 2010 World Cup at the round of sixteen stage after they lost their knockout match against a very young German side.
Capello termed Terry’s comments which came during England’s World Cup campaign as a big mistake, because the Chelsea captain had criticized Capello’s team tactics and player selection through the press. After Capello had termed Terry’s comments in the press as a big mistake, Terry apologized to the English team manager.
Cannavaro recently came out and said, Terry might not be on England’s team sheet again as long as Capello is in charge. The former Italian captain said that, Capello won’t have anyone disrupting his tournament again. He added that Fabio Capello is not someone that you can mess with. He elaborated by saying that, Fabio is quite capable of reviving the England team and turning it into an outfit which can compete at Euro 2012.
He said that, when Capello took over at Real Madrid he brought in new players like Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Cannavaro himself. He stated that at the club level this resulted in immediate success as Madrid won the Spanish League title, however at the international level it takes a little more time to build a successful squad.
The World Cup winning defender also said that, Capello will bring about changes for England’s squad if they manage to qualify for the European Championships in 2012. He also stated that according to him, only two of the players who played for England in the World Cup deserve a start in the opening game of Euro 2012, those players are Rooney and Ashley Cole.
Cannavaro also applauded the F.A for retaining Capello as their national team’s manager after England’s disappointing World Cup campaign. He said that, Spain might be favorites right now for the Euro 2012 title but if Capello manages to destroy some of the egos in the English camp, English people will see how good a decision it was to hold onto him.
