International Football: Capello to work with English coaches
The present English team manager, Fabio Capello has agreed to work with Sir Trevor Brooking in an attempt to improve English coaches’ skills. England’s premature exit from the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa has prompted a wide debate which is centered on the question of whether England’s youngsters are as good at football as the ones in Spain or Germany?
The English squad that went to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa was one of the oldest squads in the competition. They were blamed for being tired and fatigued in their displays against teams such as Algeria and Germany.
The English national team has also failed to achieve success at a major international football competition since the year 1966, when they won the World Cup as a host nation. English coaches, who are responsible for educating and guiding young talent that come their way through the academies, have also come under criticism for their rigid training regimes. Their lack of tactical knowledge and static training methods are considered hurtful to nurturing young players into world class footballers.
English coaches have been known to stick with the conventional 4-4-2 formation in their training matchups and thus players are only trained to play in such a formation. When they are deployed in a more versatile strategic formation, such as the 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, their performances suffer.
Fabio Capello’s job as the English national team manager was under threat because of England’s recent shambolic performances in the World Cup. However, F.A has come out and said that they will be sticking with Capello at least till 2012. Capello’s next chance to impress will come as soon as England are set to participate in the European Championships qualifiers for the final tournament in 2012.
Sir Trevor Brooking and Capello are expected by the F.A to come up with certain recommendations that will be aimed at improving England’s football youth development and coach education system. Fabio Capello’s managerial work with Italian clubs such as Roma, Juventus and A.C Milan has cemented his place as one of the best tacticians in the game. He is known to nurture young talents such as Francesco Totti at Roma and Paulo Maldini at A.C Milan, both of these players reached great heights under Capello’s training and guidance.
F.A are also looking to appoint a new independent chairman after Lord Triesman resigned after England’s despairing World Cup campaign. F.A said that they are looking for a candidate who has real affiliation with football.
They also emphasized the fact that they want their new chairman to be independent in all the decisions he makes. Currently, F.A’s rules include a clause which states that anyone who has had a “material business relationship with a football entity in the past year" is not eligible to qualify for the job as the Football Association’s chairman.
However, negotiations are currently underway for the elimination of this rule. Today, on Friday July 16th, F.A convenes again to discuss this rule elimination. If an agreement is reached then it will be ratified when F.A’s special general meeting takes place in the month of October.
