International Football: Fabregas apologizes to the Spanish fans as Spain get battered by four goals to nil in Portugal
Fabregas, Arsenal’s captain and the Spanish football team’s creative midfielder has come out and said sorry to all the Spanish fans as the World Champions recorded their second defeat after winning the World Cup in South Africa. Spain lost their friendly
match against Portugal by four goals to nil, in an encounter that saw the men in red torn to shreds by a rampant Portuguese side.
Spain started with a heavy number of their stars in the starting lineup but it was a woeful performances by the La Furia Roja who failed to live up to the expectations of their fans as Portugal netted four goals past an extremely porous Spanish defense.
Jorge Carlos Martins was the first man to net for Portugal right before the half time whistle sounded in Lisbon. The second half saw the likes of Helder Postiga score before Ramos scored an own goal. The final goal of the match was scored by Hugo Almeida who
sealed an impressive win for the home side.
Spain had earlier on in the year defeated Portugal in the round of sixteen at the FIFA 2010 World Cup, a tournament which Spain won in the end by scoring a late extra time goal in the final match against Netherlands. Fabregas spoke to the press after the
match as he said, "We're hurt. It's been a big scoreline but we have to lift ourselves. We wanted to finish the year well but now we have to wait until February. It's not been our best game but you also have to know how to lose. The truth is it's a match where
we can't take anything positive. They played better than us; they had a lot of desire...."
Spain lost earlier on in the autumn as well to Argentina, a match in which Argentina ended up as eventual winners by four goals to one. Fabregas added to his comments as he said; "Now we need to apologize to the fans and continue forward."
Vicente Del Bosque, Spain’s coach was also critical of the team as he said, "We couldn't have played any worse. We had a very weak second half and I have to recognize that Portugal have been better than us. We have no excuses. I'm very upset because it was
an important game and it hasn't been our day. We had good intentions but the reality is we haven't been good either on the pitch or on the bench."
Spanish players will now return to their respective club duties as Fabregas will return to Arsenal for their upcoming weekends match against Tottenham Hotspurs in the English Premier League. Arsenal are currently 2nd in the English league table
and will be looking to gain all three points by defeating their North London rivals at the weekend.
