Ilkay Gundogan had the best chance of the opening half to break the deadlock at the stroke of half-time interval, and the talented midfielder even beat Vermeer. However, his effort was cleared off the line by Heitinga, much to the relief of Louis van Gaal.
The Flying Dutchmen struggled throughout the opening half, and apart from Arjen Robben’s effort that went wide of the target, they failed to create any goalscoring opportunity of note.
