International Olympic Committee receives bids of Tokyo and Doha for Olympics 2022
The International Olympic Committee has formally received the bids of Tokyo, Japan as well as Doha, Qatar for the hosting of the 2020 Olympic Games.
Having done so two days before the deadline, the two cities became the first ones to make the submissions. The total number of candidate cities that are aspiring to stage the Olympic Games in 2020 are six in all.
While submitting the files for the 2020 Olympic Games, the president of the Tokyo bid, Tsunekazu Takeda, made the following statement, “We have learned valuable lessons from our previous bid, which are evident from these improved technical plans.”
On the other hand, the vice chairman of the Doha bid, Sheik Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, shared his views in the following manner, “Our applicant file contains a strong hosting plan that is based on many existing venues and a number of planned facilities.
2020 is an historic opportunity to grow the Olympic movement in a new region.”
It is not certain that all the candidates who will make submissions will be called in to make their case as the IOC may filter out a city if it feels its bid is not up to the mark. However, it will not be until the September of the year 2013 that the IOC
will make its final decision on the host city of the Olympic Games 2020. During that time, all of the documents provided by the bidding cities will be studied and scrutinised.
The 2022 bid is the second time in a row that Tokyo is making an attempt to secure the Olympic Games once again. The capital of Japan failed to secure the bid for the 2016 Olympic Games which will now be hosted by the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Tokyo
has earned itself the honour of being host to the Olympic Games way back in 1964.
Apart from Doha and Tokyo, the other candidates that will be submitting their bids to the IOC are Madrid of Spain, the Turkish city of Istanbul, the ancient Italian city of Rome as well as Baku of Azerbaijan.
