The new kings of France were given a lot of ‘paper-time’ on many newspapers both in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 and all over the world following their incredible Championelle success
The news is out. Montpellier Herault are the new champions of France for the first time in their history. Never before had La Paillade been so close to winning the league and the time was right for them to end the season as the deserving champions.
The journey has been long and arduous and full of twists and turns for La Paillade. However, this young team from the South of France defied all odds and showed real character to make sure that they end the season as the champions.
After a 2-1 win at Auxerre during a game that was twice stopped due to the home side’s fans’ disturbance, Montpellier players and fans went on celebrating through the night.
However, the effects of this remarkable achievement are not confined only to Montpellier or France. People all over the world have taken a note of what the team has just achieved.
Le Parisien, a sports daily that is usually accused of being pro-PSG, applauded the adversary’s achievement.
The Midi Libre savoured the triumph of a team that had “13th biggest budget in France who beat all odds”.
L’Equipe for its part, was not to be left out of the contest of catchy lines.
“Crazy night at the Place de la Comedie,” was the headline and French sports daily even mocked the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AJ-Auxerre-c38247 fans’ behaviour by saying, “getting 41 minutes of ‘downtime’.”
Despite some really tumultuous and harsh circumstances, Montpellier managed to beat Auxerre.
L’Equipe was also enraged by what the Auxerre fans had in store for the champions-to-be. “A great champions who did not deserve this,” wrote the daily, indicating the foolish happenings at the Stade Abbe Deschamps.
Across the Alps, it was Il Corriere Dello Sport that welcomed the coronation of Montpellier Herault.
“Kings of France that ‘KOed’ Carlo Ancelotti and PSG,” wrote the Italian daily.
PSG spent a fortune to win the Championelle and their buying power was mocked by the daily further. “QIA’s check book deemed inadequate,” a cheeky jibe on the Qatari owners.
Spanish daily Marca and O Globo staff were equally pleased to see the deserving side lift the Championelle.
The lore of Montpellier has indeed reached far beyond the French borders and it seems that it is time for the club to start preparing for good yet testing days ahead.
