Question:

International checking luggage question?

I am flying to NZ in a couple of months. I'm flying out from a tiny airport to LAX and then onward to NZ. Will they let me know what the status of my checked luggage is? Or do I need to ask and find out when to pick it up and recheck it?

  1. I have checked luggage straight through from Jackson Wy (not a big place) via LAX to Sydney Australia without problems.

  2. I think usually luggage is checked straight through when you're transferring in LA. LAX is a big hub and there are a lot of transfers to international flights through there. The best thing to do though is contact your airline, the one you're flying to LAX with. They will know if the luggage will be checked straight through to NZ.

  3. They'll be able to tell you that when you check your luggage at your local airport.

If you have left enough time (between arriving at LAX and departing for NZ), AND your local airport has the facility to check your luggage through to your final destination, you shouldn't have to worry.

However, if you have not left enough time, you will have to collect your luggage at LAX and then transfer to the international departure check-in and check your luggage through to New Zealand when you get your boarding pass.
