International news? news junkies?

Question

I want to start keeping up with the news, particularly international news, and learn more about what's going on the world because i want to be a conference interpreter (hopefully for the U.N.) as well as a human rights activist... problem is i NEVER watch/read the news... i really don't know where to begin it's a little overwhelming coming from my sheltered point of view... what sources do u use? what is the best news/shows to watch and when? I've got a lot of catching up to do! where do i get started?!

you might start with the NY Times and/or Wall St Journal.

radio and tv are not good, because they have a limited time for each story, so you don't get much.

pbs  newshour is fairly good if you have to use tv.

bbc is okay, but again, short.

economist magazine is good.
