Is buying an international text books really the same as the US Standard version?

Yes, they are.  The actual text is the same and they are usually a lot cheaper.  However, if you need to by a book that includes and online access code or a CD ROM, there is a good chance that the international book will have this bundled inside.  You will then need to order this separately from the actual publisher of the book, the CD, or the website.  Also, you most likely will not be allowed to sell that book back to school bookstore, so once you buy it, your stuck with it.  So, yes, there are both pros and cons to this buying option.
