I just need one for basic internet.

most computers now come with the connect card ( network card)

the internet provider will provide a modem to connect you

In terms of high speed internet there are two different types offered

from cable companies - cable internet

and from phone companies ( at and t)  the service is called dsl

both are fine

phone around for the best deal

I have one through Alltel and it works great!  I've seen the commercials about the AT&T connect cards but I already have Alltel wireless services so i added it to my plan.  The device only cost about $100 bucks but with the rebate i only paid $40.  the plan is about $60 a month for unlimited access where ever you have a signal.
