Question:

Internet Connection malfunction after reinstalling new Operating System.?

Here is the low down. I got a virus. I deleted all my old stuff. Reinstalled Windows XP.

My internet connection connects to a router by net gear. I connect this desktop to the router through an Ethernet cable. I also connect two laptops wirelessly to this router.

For some reason though, my laptops can connect to the internet fine, but my desktop does not want to. I plugged my laptops in through the cable, and they worked. So, I am thinking something is wrong with my computer.

I have no clue how to set up an internet connection, I thought it would be as simple as plug and play, but apparently not. What I know is that the Ethernet cable plugged in the back of my computer does light up green, so i do think the computer recognizes it, i just don't know how to set it up.

Can you help, or tell me whom to call?

  1. You reinstalled your computer. Did you also reinstall the drivers for your computer.

If you did not, then the ethernet driver and also various other drivers will not be installed on your computer.

The only way you could of installed the drivers is if you had a driver disk along with your OS disk.

Drivers- Software that is installed on your operating system to create a middle bridge or pathway for external/internal hardware to work in conjunction with your operating system.

also another way to install drivers is to download off the approiate website. such as support.hp.com or support.dell.com, if you tell me what kind of computer you have i can provide more information and a valid link to the driver download you need.

    Anymore questions ask me

  2. sounds like the drivers for the Ethernet card are not working go into control panel then to system then device manager look for any ! or X marks if found delete them and reboot the computer
