Question:

Internet access without Router?

Is there a USB device that would make it possible to plug in and provide instant internet access to all of my wifi devices? If it's not USB but is still capable of transmitting a wifi signal, please mention it. It doesn't have to be instant, also. It just needs to be able to work without installing programs onto every computer I use.

To be clear: The home computer is connected to internet, and I just need a way to transmit wifi from it to another device through LAN or WEP, but I can't install software onto the computer that's being used

  2. to answer the question "Internet access without Router?" no... it is impossible... the internet is basically a network of networks connected with millions of routers. The protocol used with router to router interface can't be simply used for connecting directly to the line in your house to your computer. you need a modem if you are going to connect.

a good piece of equipment to have would be a linksys wireless router typically or should i say "in all the time i've been working with networking equipment" i've never had to install any thing on the router it self but on the other hand if you are talking about installing anything on the computer it is almost mandatory especially if you installed a new peripheral on said computer then you would need a Driver (program that communicates between the pc and the peripheral).

  3. Most routers don't need special software installed as long as every devise has a WiFi card. You simply plug your cable/DSL modem into the router and your home becomes a WiFi HotSpot. There are a lot of routers that are very small and cheep - I'd check NewEgg.Com since they have the best prices most of the time.

There is not a device to make your computer a WiFi router though - you'll need to buy a true router.

  4. You would HAVE to use a router.
