Question:

Internet fast with modem but slow with router?

I have a Linksys Modem and Netgear WGR614 v6 router. I have had a 3MB line from Cable one since Feb 2007 and never experience the slow speed before while running wireless. Just yesterday, the router started showing a speed of 510 kbps. When I connected my computer directly to the modem, the speed was 3MB. Why is it doing so? I dont understand. Can you please help me troubleshoot this or point to a good resource. Thanks

  1. This is becoming a common problem as neighborhoods get saturated with WIFI signals.

The first thing to try is to change the channel your router is using.  There are 11 channels available, and most routers come preset to channel 6.  As more and more private wireless networks pop up, they start stepping all over each other since they are all on the same channel.

You set the channel in the router's configuration utility.  Don't worry about your computer - it will automatically find it.

  2. I think something is wrong with your router configuration. Maybe you should try re-installing the router with the installation disc. I'm not really familiar with this because I have this "modem/router" box. It has both a modem and a wireless router built-in. In your case, try re-installing it, or try clearing your browser cache. Also, do you have the router plugged into your computer by USB or Ethernet? If it's USB, I think that your USB hub may have some issues. Try the 3 options I gave you. I never really had this problem nor have I heard of it, but hope it helped!

One more thing, make sure that if your modem came with phone filters, you have those filters properly installed.

  3. Are you connecting wired direct to modem and wireless to router.  If so, look for interference in the wireless signal.  It could be from nearby wireless phones or even from a neighbors wireless link. remember these devices are all using the same part of the wireless spectrum and must compete with each other for bandwidth in that part of the spectrum

    Feel free to email me,

  4. You may need to get a new router. Do you mean that your getting 510 kbps in a speedtest like speedtest.net? or are your download speeds 510 kbps like when you download a file
