  1. The hub isn't picking up your sons computer.  Give it a while and thenn try again.

Check all the switches are on your sons computer as when my son was connecting his to wireless for the first time he was getting a similar message and it turned out he hadn't pressed the wirless button on his laptop.  I hasten to add this was so small not surprised he missed it.

  2. If the computer is wireless, it may be out of range of the hub, or there may be some large metal object in the path, preventing it from connecting.

If it's wired, and running Windows, check the DHCP service (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services).  The DHCP client service has to be on - that's what actually gets the network address from the hub.

Another possibility is that this computer has a fixed network address (the IP address) set up for it, and this address is one that's already been assigned by the hub to another computer.  (In Windows, the network adapter should be set to "automatically get" its IP address.  Where you do that varies with the version of Windows.)
