My internet has always worked fine, but today it started having problems. I don't know a lot about computers but I know that there is a router in the middle of my house and all the computers get internet from it, that's working fine and every computer connected to it is working fine except mine. I'm on my mom's computer asking this. When I open the internet it says it can't display the page, I can't sign into any IMs, and I can't use anything else that requires internet connection. However when I click the little computer in the bottom right it says my connection is Very Good or Excellent. Please help, and I hope I can understand it.

  1. If your machine has ZoneAlarm products installed and the machine just did a Microsoft Update, this is a known problem.

This has been caused by a Windows update (KB951748) released on July 7, 2008, that conflicts with ZoneAlarm products.  There are several ways to fix the problem

    1. You could uninstall ZoneAlarm and activate Windows Firewall instead.  I don’t recommend this.

    2. You could lower the ZoneAlarm security rating for the Internet Zone to Medium.  This isn’t great either.

    3. You could uninstall or not install the Windows update in question.  About as good as #2.

    4. You could download and install the fix from ZoneAlarm appropriate to your machine.  This is the one I recommend.  Here’s a list of the respective fixes, followed by the steps to install them.

    ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1...

    ZoneAlarm Pro: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1...

    ZoneAlarm Antivirus: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1...

    ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1...

    ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall:  http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1...

    Now to install the above:

    1. Click the Start->Control Panel menu item.

    2. Click Add or Remove Programs.

    3. Check the Show Updates checkbox.

    4. When the list box fills, scroll down and find the KB951748 fix.

    5. Click the Remove button and remove it.

    6. Close the window.

    7. Download and install the ZoneAlarm update(s) appropriate for your machine.

    8. Go to the Microsoft Update site and reinstall KB951748.  (Note:  Use Internet Explorer for this.) http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupd...

    9. If step 8 doesn’t work use this link instead (Note:  Use Internet Explorer for this.):  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

    Hope that helps.

  2. Try this:

    1)

Go to Start->Run and type in: cmd

then a black box comes up. Now type in: ipconfig /release

You will then see alot of zeros.

    Now type in ipconfig /renew

    2) If that fails turn off the pc unhook the power to the modem and any router attached to the modem. Wait 30-60secs and replug it in. Start the pc up and see what happens. And while you are at it check the connections between the modem and the router, it maybe loose.

    3) Check to see if your firewall  blocked the connection. To test this turn off the firewall and see if the internet works.

4)If all fails connect your router company or your ISP and they can help you out more.

  3. the connection to the router is good.

have administrator reset the network that the router is on ..or by clicking repair there.

or by turning it on or off ..(sometimes unplugging the router and restarting it will fix this too.)

  4. Right click on that little computer and then click repair, see if that helps.

  5. although im pretty sure you have one, I just want to ask you to be sure

do you have a 'modem'... it looks like a blackbox that is given to you by your internet service provider (isp; comcast, at&t, verizon, etc.)

i assume you have a wireless connection..

a router works like this, it connects (wireless/wired) computer to the modem which is connected to the internet (a coaxial cable)

so it will be like this:

    Internet <> modem <> router <> computer

in your problem, the connection of your computer to the router is great.

the problem would now be either the router's connection to the modem or the modem's connection to the coax cable(internet).

check if the powerplug of your modem is intact... although a modem has batteries installed as default, most models would not connect to the internet when just power by batteries.

next check if the router settings is not changed... try connecting to the router with wires for a while just to try if it will work. use wpa2 or wpa if its available, your connection might be in jeopardy.

after checking that, ask your isp if they're having problems with their conenction in your area...

if all these dont work, maybe its just a temporary interference (many causes)
