Internet on a laptop?

Ok, so i have a laptop it has a wireless card and all that good stuff but how do i get the signal from my pc downstairs that has road runner to my laptop upstairs??

Do i need a router? A specific router? How do i hook that up?

Or do i just need some kind of adapter? HELP PLEASE!!

any router will due. but you do need one. belkin, linkys, telcon, all good routers. but i would talk to your isp for the best router, it might be a little more to go through your internet service provider (isp) but that way you know that your wireless is supported. ps. don't for get the wep key.

You need a wireless router.  There will be instructions with the router.

The Wireless card you have with your laptop should work with Wireless routers, assuming the technology works with each other. (i.e. Wireless b/g/n)

What you will need, if you don't have it is a wireless router. These can be from 30-200$$ but generally you shouldn't need one over 50$ for basic use.

What I would do is contact your ISP and ask them if they have a cheap way for you to get wireless (through an adapter or such)  

or

Check places like BestBuy or Amazon.com and seach for Wireless routers.

(if you go to a physical store, bring you laptop with, they might(becuase some sales people are clueless) be able to tell you if your Wireless laptop card will work with what router.

In order for you to have a wireless signal you will have to set up a router emit that signal.

You would have to connect the (roadrunner) internet modem to the wireless router. Many routers have ethernet ports which would give you the option to keep your computer downstairs connected via the ethernet cable. Notice that there is a special port for the internet modem in the router.

Routers can run you anywhere from $50 to $150. It depends on how far do you want the signal to go and the speed. You can buy used ones on ebay or run to your local electronics store to find one.

The routers are relatively easy to set up with the provided documentation. Most will also provide a phone number and site to visit if you run into any problems.
