  1. Restarting id the first step to fix everything. If it doesn't work make sure the router is working and the LAN cable is fully in

  2. Try changing the IP addressing to dynamic on the desktop.  To do this,

    Windows XP

    1. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections.  Right click the active network connection (it should NOT have a red X on it, if it does check the cable) and click Properties.

    2. Scroll to the bottom and double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

    3. Click Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

    4. Click OK in all the windows and try again.

    Windows Vista

    1. Go to Start > Control Panel  > Network and Sharing Center.

    2. Click Diagnose and Repair.

    3. Follow the directions on screen.

    Another thing to check:

    1. Open Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections.

    2. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected.

    3. Go to LAN Settings at the bottom of the page.

    4. Make sure "Use a proxy server" is unchecked.

    Good luck!
