Internet problems (I have Qwest and all my computers are working but 1)?

I have quest DSL and have never had any problems with it until now. All my computers are working with it except for my desktop, it is connected to my modem via ethernet cable, at first i thought it was the network adapter, so i put a new one in but that didnt help. It looks like everything should be working perfectly with it (modem says that it is connected and so does the light on the adapter) but it wont connect to the internet. When I run Qwest Quickcare it always tells me that it recommends to renew the IP address settings, so i let it and then it always says to make sure that my modem is on and all the cords are firmly connected and then it tells me that it was unable to diagnose my problem.

oh and i tried hooking up my laptop with the same ethernet cable and it worked fine, so i am lost

any help would be great

  1. If you have restricted the range of IP addresses the modem can deal out to the computers (normally there are about 255 of them, but it's easy to shrink the range to just those needed), this could indicate they're all in use.  That, in turn, would mean one of two things.  Either

    1. You just added a new computer or device that's using the last address, or

    2. Someone has joined your wireless network surreptitiously and is doing the same thing.

If you can get into the modem's administration pages from another computer, investigate that way.

    Good luck.

  2. It sounds like there is a problem either with the Ethernet connection on the back of the desktop, a problem with the driver running your ethernet card, or a setting in the Network Connection.  Check in Control Panel under system to see if your ethernet card shows up in networking devices and that it does not have a red X over it. Once you see the network card in the System area, right click on it and go to properties.  Make sure this says that everything is working correctly.

Also, in Control Panel, check under Network Connections.  Make sure that your LAN connection is open and does not have an X on it.  If it does, then you will have to open the port again.

Hope this helps...Just remember that it is not Qwest but the desktop computer.  And, it is probably the NIC (Network) Card or a network setting within Windows.
