  1. Have you replaced the cables? Have you tried updating the drivers for your Ethernet port and modem software?

If you need further help, people at www.computalk.net may be able to help.

  2. A n/w cable is unplugged. Could mean a LOT of TS, it could be something as simple as a N/W cable actually being unplugged, Cable bad, Ethernet card fried, Port on router fried, or software issues. Check on the back where the ethernet cable goes. Normally you get a light if all is ok, do you get that light? try taking one computer to the other, ie the one upstairs .. bring it down or take the suspect one up to see if they work with interchanged positions. Do not change any cables just yet. So if the suspect works upstairs we can leave the settings & hardware on the suspect computer out. that would mean either bad cable or bad port on router. exchange cables & see if it works now. If changing cable works, then cable is faulty, if changing cables does not, it would point to the router being the culprit.

In case the suspect computer does not work upstairs, it could mean that ethernet port/card fried as settings are pretty solid for ethernet.. USB is a different matter altogether.. By the way did you have any storms recently? That would surely point to a fried card. If you can try connecting if possible the computer with a USB cable to the modem. If it works, it'll surely mean ethernet card fried out

  3. Try using another ethernet cable.  Yours may have been damaged somehow.  Open up a cmd window and do a ping 127.0.0.1.  If you get responses that indicates that the network card is seeing itself.  Type in ipconfig /all and see fi you are getting a gateway IP address.  If not go to the functioning PC and get that number.  On the suspect PC try to ping the IP number for the gateway.  If you have connectivity you will get 4 responses.  If no responses your cable is definitely the number one suspect.
