Internet shareing with out a router?

i hear it is possible to have two computers connected to the internet with out having to buy a router but i have forgot the name of the cable you have to use can anyone help me

  1. Would you be looking for a crossover cable?  Never actually set anything up this way, but it is feasible.

    Well basically what you need is a cross over cable and 2 network cards on one computer.  One of your computers will turn into a type of router for the internet traffic / network, and the other computer will connect to that computer.  

  3. A multi-homed system will work if the modem connecting to the internet requires ethernet. If the modem is usb, then only one network card per system will do fine.

    The cable is indeed called a cross-over cable, but simply plugging the cable in does not make it work. You need to ensure the systems are on the same "subnet" and are in the same "workgroup" - this is all to do with networking. A useful link below.
