Hi, I am an oversea student finishing my uni this september. I have a few questions struggling. Could you please give me some advice?

1: If I am holding a student visa, am I liable for Council Tax?

2: When I graduate and unempoly yet do I need to pay Coucil Tax? If yes, which band I am qualified ?

3: If I have difficulty in paying CT, what can I do? Is there reduction or exception or delay ?

4: When I am not a student? From the day I leave uni or when I have my certification ?

Many thanks,

M

  1. 1) As a full time student you may be disregarded for Council Tax purposes - if all occupants of a property are disregarded students then a Class N exemption is applied. You need to inform the council that you are a student.

2)If your unemployed then you may qualify for Hosing/Council Tax Benefit. The Council Tax that would be due would depend on the area, the council tax band and the status of the residents. You would need the Council to advise you properly as they would have the full information available.

    3) If you have any trouble you need to speak to the council ASAP. If you cant/wont pay then a Court Summons may be issued,

    4) Your not a student from the date you finish university.

  2. If you don't earn enough money you don't have to pay council tax, that is if you don't have  many thousands of pounds in your bank account, I think the most you can have in the bank is £8,000 anything over this and you must pay council tax, If you are the only person living in the property you can get a discount of 25% that is if you have to pay council tax. If you are a student with a visa you may not have to pay anything, phone your local council and the will tell you

  3. Full time student are exempt from Council Tax, overseas, EU, or UK students.
