Question:

Interning at a Magazine..???

Ok, so lately I've been sort of re-assessing my career choices for after I graduate from high school, and working at a magazine has always been high on my list.

I know that it's pretty hard to get on a a magazine such a Vogue or Teen Vogue, but I was wondering....how would I do that? Would I send in a resume like any other job or is there more steps involved? Would I have to go to their main offices and personally meet and talk to the people working there?

What sort of college courses would I need to take?

Any help would be appreciated!!

  1. Hey Leanna,

It depends what field you want to do. If you want to be a journalist, I highly recommend you start taking a course in journalism and take part in your high school paper. Therefore, you can build your work/portfolio. In addition, in college, its great to join your paper.

Internships at magazines are very competitive, especially at well known publications such as Teen Vogue, Vogue, Seventeen, Cosmogirl, etc.

For college courses, I highly suggest that you major in English or double major in English and something so you range in diversity with your writing. Like fashion trends (business), health (biology), etc.

If writing is not for you, maybe art. You can become a layout designer or creative director when it comes to the photography/cover of the magazine.

There are a lot of careers within the publication companies. If youa re really interested in Teen Vogue, send a letter to them expressing your interest. When I mailed Seventeen magazine, they basically told me what I am telling you (minus the art).

FYI: Teen Vogue is owned by Conde Nast Publications. Check them out below along with the other magazines.
